• “Disability in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts, Australia (DADAA), based in Western Australia, is established in 1994”
  The National Participate Conference, hosted by Arts Access Victoria in 1990, set the scene for the emergence of the DADAA network. This came after several years of conversations among Western Australian artists about starting an organisation; the organisation was officially established in 1994. “In 1986, a small group of artists with disability met to discuss starting their own WA-based arts organisation. It is from this meeting that DADAA slowly grew, from a pilot project it became an organisation in its own right in 1994: taking the name Disability in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts, Australia – DADAA.”

  Tutti Arts 'Christmas Concert- It All Starts Now' 2013 Program - reads, in part “For sixteen years the Tutti Choir has been a passionate force for change through the creation of music and theatre which surprises, entertains and reveals a different world view. Since 2001, the collaborative relationship between singers with a disability, community singers and professional musicians and composers has supported the development of several award winning music theatre works, exhilarating performances here and overseas, and to the formation of three choirs who are all performing this afternoon; the original Tutti Choir, Poco Tutti, a small choir for advanced singers, and Club Tutti, for those who enjoy social singing. This afternoon we also introduce the Tutti Kids and Youth Ensemble who are opening the concert with an original song. Our organisation also supports choirs based on the Tutti model and this afternoon the Gathering Wave Choir from lnkpot Arts, Mount Barker is delighted to be sharing their theme song with us.”

Daniel also shared his perspectives on the challenges and achievements within the disability arts scene in Australia, including public awareness and integration with contemporary art.

  Matthew Shilcock is a stage and film performer, dancer, director, choreographer, producer, project planner, manager, consultant and disability advocate. Interview Summary Matthew Shilcock, a contemporary dancer, lives with osteogenesis imperfecta, a condition that led him to discover dance as an affordable alternative to physiotherapy. His 12-year dance career has been shaped by working with both disabled and non-disabled artists, including elite companies and individual dancers, where he found a passion for the unique problem-solving and rewarding experiences that come with working with disabled dancers. As he transitions from performer to dance maker, Matthew's motivation has shifted from personal excitement and self-discovery to a focus on the next generation, aiming to pass on his unique experiences and methodologies. He acknowledges that while being on stage as a disabled artist can be inherently political, he values his authenticity and the impact of his work over the perceptions and labels placed upon disability in the arts.
