Triggers

The stories and historical records in this website include

  • changes in what we classify as 'disability,' what we call Disabled people, and the personal, social, and professional consequences of disclosing that we identify as d/Deaf, Disabled, and/or Neurodivergent
  • accounts of discrimination, insitutionalisation, and what the Royal Commission into the experience of Disabled people in Australia in 2019-2022 called violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation of Disabled people.
The project team, and the project Steering Committee, has chosen to keep these words, stories, and events in our history, to record past experiences of oppression, and promote discussion of how we can create change in the future.

Glimmers

Some of the stories and histories shared in this website are difficult, and triggering, because they remind us of the discrimination Disabled artists have experienced in Australia.

Within this history, though, our timeline shows the quality and quantity of work artists have created from the 1960s forwards.

The Disability Arts community is established, experienced, and innovative.

Although our stories and histories can be challenging, and confronting, they are also a rich resource to push all of us to imagining what a more inclusive industry in the future might look like.
