This website shares stories and records of Disability Arts in Australia.
Words on the website –
- Disabled artists use different words to describe themselves
- These words have changed over time – some words used in the page may be upsetting to readers today
- Some people say “disabled artist” – they are proud of being a disabled person, so they put ‘disability’ first
- Some people say “artist with disability” – they are an artist, who happens to have a disability, so they put ‘artist’ first
- This website uses all these words, depending on what the artists themselves have used in their stories and records at the time

What the website covers
- The website does not include every story of every artist involved in Disability Arts in Australia over the last 50 years
- Some documents are hard to find, or have been lost, over time
- Some documents are in boxes, in offices or libraries, and we did not have time or money to go through all of them
- Some documents were not public at the time they were created, and we have not been sure that the people they talk about would want them to be public now
The team decided it would be better to share what we have been able to collect, rather than wait longer to share these documents, or not share these documents at all.
The team would like to add more stories and documents to the website in the future.
This will depend on money, time, and the amount of energy we as disabled people have to keep doing this.
